mattresses buying guide

everything you need to know

you will spend around a third of your life on your mattress, and unlike almost everything else in the home, you experience it with your eyes closed. that makes it uniquely easy to purchase the wrong piece: the things that matter cannot be judged from a photograph or a price tag.

as a one-stop destination for furniture and home accessories, we carry mattresses for a straightforward reason: after twenty years of helping Hong Kong customers choose their beds, sending them elsewhere for the thing that goes on top never made sense. the mattresses we carry are chosen the way we choose everything else, with an emphasis on quality materials and on what actually works in a Hong Kong bedroom. as a general guide, five considerations settle most decisions: the type of mattress, the firmness that suits how you sleep, the size and thickness your room can take, the materials inside it, and the base underneath it all.

1. which type of mattress is right for you?

mattress types are less mysterious than the industry makes them sound. nearly everything on the market is built around one of a few ideas: a core of natural or synthetic foam, a bed of springs, or a combination of the two (often sold as a "hybrid"). the mattresses we carry cover three of the most proven approaches: natural organic latex, individual pocket spring, and the patented Miracoil spring system.

natural latex is foam as nature makes it: tapped from the rubber tree, with an open structure designed to maximise airflow and ventilation for a cool, comfortable night's sleep. it is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, bacteria and mould, which matters more in Hong Kong than almost anywhere else. our organic latex mattresses come through our partner Heveya, whose cores are certified organic.

pocket spring mattresses take the opposite route: hundreds of individual springs, each sewn into its own fabric pocket, so every spring responds only to the weight directly above it. two people of different builds can share one without disturbing each other, and support follows the shape of the body rather than averaging it out. the Miracoil system is a different spring philosophy: a continuous coil design engineered to support spinal alignment, with the wire running in a way that resists roll-together.

worth knowing

"hybrid" is the word you will meet most often online: a spring core topped with a foam comfort layer. many pocket spring mattresses, including designs with latex comfort layers, are hybrids in all but name, so compare what a mattress is made of rather than what the label calls it.

2. firmness: how you sleep decides

as a general guide, the right firmness is the one that keeps your spine level while you sleep, and that depends on your sleeping position. firmer does not necessarily mean better!

side sleepers need a surface with enough give for the shoulder and hip to settle into, so a medium feel tends to work best; too firm and the pressure points make themselves known by morning. back sleepers usually do well on medium-firm, which supports the lower back without letting the hips sink. front sleepers generally want the firmest surface of the three, keeping the body from bowing into the mattress. heavier builds benefit from firmer support across the board; lighter builds settle less and can go softer.

we always recommend to give a mattress ten to fifteen unhurried minutes in your normal sleeping position before deciding. if you’d like to test out our mattresses in person, you’ll find the widest selection we carry is at our 25,000 sq ft showroom at Horizon Plaza, Ap Lei Chau, and nobody will hover while you close your eyes. of course, our team is always on standby to help you find a mattress that fits your preference and budget. if you and your partner can’t agree on firmness, fret not! some of our king-size mattresses can be ordered as a “pair king”, enabling you to choose a different firmness level for each side of the bed.

3. size and thickness: what fits a Hong Kong bedroom

mattress sizing in Hong Kong needs untangling before anything else: local, EU and UK conventions coexist here, and a "queen" is not always the same width from one shop to the next. the table below shows the ranges you will most often meet, as a general guide; always confirm the dimensions in centimetres, and if you already own the bed frame, measure the platform rather than trusting the label.

mattress sizes in Hong Kong: a general guide

sizetypical dimensions
single90–91 × 190 cm
double122–137 × 190 cm
queen150–160 × 190–200 cm
king180–200 × 200 cm

selected designs also come in super king or be custom-made to a specific size (alongside our reclaimed teak bed frames), which solves the awkward case of an older frame that matches no modern convention.

thickness is the measurement most guides skip and the one that matters surprisingly often here. the mattresses we carry are typically 15–33cm thick. a slimmer profile keeps the overall bed height sensible on a platform frame and suits compact bedrooms, where a towering mattress can make the whole room feel smaller; a deeper mattress gives more comfort layering and suits a lower frame. before you buy, add the mattress thickness to the platform height of your frame and check the total against your headboard and your windowsill.

if you are choosing the frame and mattress together, size the room first and the bed second; our guide to fitting a king size bed in a small room covers the space question in detail, and the full range of solid wood bed frames is worth a look too.

4. materials: what natural fillings do in a Hong Kong bedroom

a mattress is a textile product you breathe next to for eight hours a night, so what is inside it deserves at least as much attention as how it feels. many of the mattresses that we carry emphasise certified organic natural latex, organic cotton and other eco-friendly components free of harmful chemicals; breathability and sustainability are the two threads that run through the range. that emphasis is not an accident: as a B Corp™ certified company, we apply the same standards to what we carry as to what we make.

natural materials earn their keep in this climate. Hong Kong bedrooms live with humidity for much of the year and air conditioning for most of the rest, and latex handles both well: its open structure lets air move through the core, and its natural resistance to dust mites, bacteria and mould keeps the sleeping environment healthy without treatments or sprays. for anyone sensitive to allergens or sharing a room with someone who is, that hypoallergenic character is the quiet argument for going natural.

it is also worth asking any retailer where a mattress is made and what stands behind it. the mattresses we carry are produced in Sri Lanka or China, and the main lines carry ten-year warranties; a maker willing to stand behind a mattress for a decade is telling you something about what is inside it.

Kate Babington, Managing Director at TREE

“from the start, we knew Heveya was the perfect partner to work with, as it shares our same belief in offering beautiful products that are made with comfort, sustainability and durability in mind. each mattress and pillow is made from 100% natural organic latex tapped from organically-grown rubber trees free of pesticides and fertilisers, and made without any springs, synthetic foams or glue, creating the perfect balance of softness and support. Heveya is also B Corp™ certified – we’re delighted to be working with a like-minded brand, as well as being a part of a community of businesses working collectively in being a force for good.”

5. the base underneath: why the frame matters as much as the mattress

a mattress is only ever as good as what it sits on. a slatted base does two jobs at once: the slats absorb weight and stress evenly, which extends the life of the mattress, and the gaps between them let air circulate underneath it, preventing the moisture build-up that Hong Kong summers would otherwise encourage. every solid wood bed frame we make includes wood slats for exactly these reasons, and as a general rule, a mattress on a slatted base stays fresher for longer than one on a solid board or on the floor.

the pairing works in both directions. a new mattress on a tired, sagging base inherits the sag; an old mattress on a new frame reveals every one of its years. if your mattress is approaching the end of its life, it is worth looking at the two together, which is most of the reason we carry both. and one practical Hong Kong note: check the mattress will make the journey before it makes the bed. a 180 cm king is a stiff object in a narrow lift lobby, so we recommend confirming dimensions with us as well as accessibility before making your final purchase. our team can also deliver pieces to residences with walk-ups at an additional charge – for more details, check out our shipping & delivery page.

6. caring for your mattress in Hong Kong

a good mattress asks for a simple routine rather than hard work, and most of it is about air. Hong Kong's humidity means the single best habit is letting the mattress breathe: throw the duvet back for half an hour in the morning before making the bed, and the moisture that builds up overnight gets its chance to leave. a slatted base carries on the same work from below, quietly, every day of the year.

Hong Kong · Spring care

Spring in Hong Kong can get particularly humid, with indoor humidity spiking above 90%, and that is when your mattress appreciates a little extra care. a dehumidifier or air conditioner keeping the bedroom between 50% and 60% sees the season out comfortably, and it is as good for your bedding and frame as it is for the mattress.

practical care tips

  1. air the bed every morning: fold the duvet back for twenty to thirty minutes before making the bed; it is the easiest habit in this list and the one that earns the most.
  2. use a washable mattress protector: it takes on the everyday wear so the mattress does not have to, and a wash cycle refreshes the whole sleeping surface.
  3. rotate the mattress regularly: turning it head to foot every two to three months spreads wear evenly; check the label first, as some designs have a dedicated top side and are rotated rather than flipped.
  4. run a dehumidifier or air conditioner in the humid season: aim for indoor humidity of 50–60% in Spring; the mattress, the bedding and the solid wood frame all benefit together.
  5. vacuum the surface now and then: a gentle pass with the upholstery attachment every month or two keeps dust from settling in, and takes minutes.

and if you are ever unsure what your mattress needs, our team is always happy to talk it through for your specific home.

frequently asked questions

how often should you replace a mattress?

as a general guide, every seven to ten years, though the honest test is how you wake up rather than the calendar. visible sagging, springs you can feel, or stiffness in the morning that eases once you are up are all signs the mattress has done its work. a mattress kept on a slatted base, aired regularly and rotated will usually reach the far end of that range.

what size is a queen mattress in Hong Kong?

typically 150–160 cm wide by 190–200 cm long, though conventions vary between shops because local, EU and UK sizing all circulate in Hong Kong. always confirm the dimensions in centimetres rather than relying on the name, and measure your bed frame's platform before ordering.

what is a pocket spring mattress?

a mattress built from hundreds of individual springs, each sewn into its own fabric pocket so it responds only to the weight directly above it. the result is support that follows the shape of your body, and far less motion transfer between two sleepers; when one of you turns over, the other side of the bed barely notices.

which mattress firmness should I choose?

start from how you sleep. as a general guide: side sleepers suit medium, back sleepers medium-firm, front sleepers firm, and heavier builds a notch firmer than each of those. then lie down for ten to fifteen minutes before deciding; your shoulders and hips will tell you more than any chart.

which mattress is best for back pain?

there is no single answer, and anyone with persistent pain should speak to a professional first. as a general guide, the aim is a mattress that keeps the spine level in your usual sleeping position: medium-firm suits most back sleepers, and both individual pocket springs and the Miracoil system are designed with spinal alignment in mind. the most reliable test remains lying down properly before you buy.

is a latex mattress good for Hong Kong's climate?

it is one of the best-suited materials you can choose. latex has an open structure that lets air move through the core for a cooler night's sleep, and it naturally resists the dust mites, bacteria and mould that thrive in humid conditions. that combination is why latex anchors the natural end of the range we carry.

how do I keep a mattress fresh in Hong Kong?

air it daily by folding the duvet back for half an hour before making the bed, use a washable protector, rotate the mattress every two to three months, and run a dehumidifier through the humid spring. a slatted bed frame helps from below by keeping air moving under the mattress all year round.

how thick should a mattress be?

the mattresses we carry are typically 15–33cm, and the right point in that range depends on your frame and your room. slimmer profiles keep the overall bed height sensible on platform frames and suit compact bedrooms; deeper mattresses carry more comfort layering and pair well with lower frames. add the mattress to the platform height and check the total against your headboard before deciding.
