Home tour: a calm retreat in Southland’s show home
We were recently given the opportunity to collaborate with RK properties on its residential development, Southland, to create a thoughtfully curated, sustainably stylish show home. Nestled in the vibrant neighbourhood of Wong Chuk Hang, this four-bedroom duplex provides a calm sanctuary to relax, with each room offering unrivalled open sea views of Aberdeen. High ceilings are featured throughout the property and clean, streamlined furniture is used to achieve a light, airy and uncluttered effect.

Upon entering the property, homeowners are greeted with an open-plan dining and living room – a quietly understated abode that welcomes them to retreat from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. The dining area is furnished with a dining table, bench and wall shelves from our PI collection, with rich warm tones of sustainably sourced solid mahogany and brown-stained FSC™ teak wood that immediately grounds the space. Each piece is defined by beautiful lines and curves and is devoid of sharp edges, creating a softness that enhances the space’s calm and inviting nature. Our banquet dining chairs and voyage half-moon console table continue this curved outlook, while sculptural pieces and recycled glass votives add shape and visual interest to the dining setting

The furniture in the living room is arranged to encourage conversation whilst providing functionality and comfort. Our amor sofa in the angled configuration offers a sociable seat that’s perfect for friends and families alike to get together, while the armless iteration promotes a more open, connected feel throughout the home and fosters a seamless flow. A coffee table from the same PI collection ensures there is a cohesiveness between the two spaces. Soothing monochrome colours, soft rugs, cosy throws and plush cushions complete the look of this serene apartment.

The room off the main living room is designed with versatility in mind. Our ghia sofa bed in a vibrant hue of yellow adds a jolt of vitality to the room, and is the perfect addition to this multifunctional space. Its curved arms can either stay lifted or be flattened down, enabling homeowners to sit, lounge or host the occasional overnight guest with ease.

Every inch of space is utilised and thoughtfully curated here: a wall-mounted frame with perches creates vertical pathways for the homeowners’ cat(s) to roam and explore, ensuring that the furry member(s) of the family also have a curated space! Hanging on another wall are a set of yellow bean bag stools, keeping them within easy reach as and when needed but cleverly out of the way when not. In the corner lies a kids’ nook with storage baskets to keep toys neatly out of sight, giving way to a secret space that little ones are sure to enjoy.

While the bottom floor has designated spaces for dining, lounging and socialising, the upper floor features three sleeping sanctuaries that are perfectly designed and curated for each family member. Reclaimed teak furniture is known for its durability and strength, making it a practical and sensible choice as it will withstand the wear and tear of a teenage boy's active lifestyle. A splash of colour is added through a hunter green accent wall and blinds, which provides a sense of rejuvenation and vibrancy. Our pure and simple bed provides ample space underneath to maintain that sense of airiness, while its nova shelf doubles as a clever space-saving desk. The result is a comfortable and inviting environment for a teenager to study and unwind.

The focus in the girl’s bedroom is on sustainably sourced solid oak furniture, which not only provides a blank canvas for everything pink to appeal to the little one, but also helps bring a sense of the outdoors inside whilst fostering a connection to nature. Pink is often associated with feelings of calmness and serenity, making this colour palette an ideal choice in the room where relaxation and peacefulness are important. Tree motifs on the blinds, a mountain wall mural and toys add the final flourish, evoking a sense of adventure and play as the little one grows.

Last but certainly not least is the master bedroom, a space with soothing colours and natural materials to create a truly calming retreat. Studies have found that wood brings a range of benefits to our body and mind, such as lowering stress levels and blood pressure, as well as eliciting feelings of comfort and relaxation. The warm tones and varying wood grains in our light frame bed in FSC™-certified teak help keep the space feeling grounded. Its signature slim and sturdy cut-out leg design creates a zen-like, weightless feel, while a low-rise profile adds a casual elegance to the bedroom. By the window sits a solid teak dressing table, with plenty of natural light to get ready for the day. Our bright drum hanging lamp hangs above the bed, emphasising the height of the ceiling whilst adding to the room’s look and feel of a blissful sanctuary.

Ample and stylish built-in storage features wood detailing that brings unity to the space, and helps keep belongings neatly tucked away to maintain that sense of calm. Across the bed is an accent wall in a refreshing shade of blue, reminiscent of the tranquil waters of a tropical getaway. Sculptural wood pieces, lamps made from wood slices, an armchair as well as bespoke artwork all add depth, warmth and visual interest to this space resulting in a lovingly layered look. Indeed, who needs to go to Bali when you have an oasis right at home!
