How to design a minimalist living room

15 May 2025

Minimalism has risen in popularity, and for good reason: with its emphasis on simplicity and functionality, it creates a clutter-free (and stress-free!) space that allows you to truly relax and unwind. In today's bLOG post, we'll share our favourite minimalist living room ideas to incorporate into your abode, so that you can achieve a space that promotes a sense of calm and tranquility all whilst reflecting your individual style.

Deciding what stays and what goes

Because minimalism places a strong emphasis on simplicity, it's important to take a moment to consider what stays and what goes. Remove any items that no longer serve you, be it decor pieces that no longer reflect your personal style or old paperwork. Keep only the essential elements that contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the room. This mindful ethos sits at the heart of the ever-popular Japandi design philosophy, which encourages us to take a less-is-more approach, as well as invest in timeless, quality pieces that are made to last. Giving your living room an edit is sure to give your home an instant refresh, creating a thoughtfully curated and pared-back feel.

Create flow within your open-plan space

Flow is key to maximising floor space and achieving the look of an open, airy and minimalist room. Opt for modern living room furniture with a sleek silhouette and a minimalist design, such as pieces that have clean lines and a low profile.

After selecting your key pieces, consider an arrangement that facilitates easy movement and flow within your living space. For example, a sofa against a wall and a slimline, pared-back coffee table can create a sense of spaciousness in your living area. Complete the look with area rugs rugs and lighting fixtures of your choice, which can help define areas without losing the overall look and feel of your open, airy space.

Go neutral

When it comes to creating a minimal living room, we like to work with a small color scheme, which will leave you with a beautifully pared-back yet intentional space. Consider three or four colours that complement each other – for minimalist spaces, we recommend opting for a monochrome color palette with a focus on neutral tones. Don't be afraid to play with varying tones within the colours you selected, which will create variety, depth and a lovingly layered look.

A monochrome palette doesn't have to be boring! If you crave a little colour, consider adding them through accent pieces such as throw pillows, rugs or artwork, which can create focal points in the room and add a touch of your personality to the space.

Quality over quantity

One of the hallmarks of minimalist interior design (and the Japandi design philosophy) is prioritising quality or quantity. Opting for timeless designs (as opposed to trend-led pieces) will ensure that they can be enjoyed for many years to come. Take into careful consideration what materials the piece is made with: quality furniture that is made sustainably and responsibly will stand the test of time, naturally reducing need to replace your pieces and thereby discouraging throwaway culture.

Maximise natural light

Maximising natural light can instantly brighten up a space and creates a sense of openness typically seen in minimalist living room design. Instead of thick, heavy curtains that could potentially obstruct the the flow of light, opt for sheer curtains or blinds, which welcomes all the sunlight in whilst maintaining privacy.

Light-coloured furniture tends to reflect natural light better than pieces in a darker hue, and will therefore brighten the room and create a clean, airy ambience. If your living room lacks natural light, fret not! Mirrors are an excellent addition to bounce light around the space whilst creating the illusion of a larger and brighter room.

Add warmth through texture

Minimalist design certainly does encourage paring it back, but that doesn't necessarily mean your space has to look sterile. Incorporating texture through minimalist decor can bring warmth and cosiness to the space. This can be introduced through throw pillows, rugs and curtains, which all can be mix and matched to achieve that cosy, inviting and lovingly layered look.

We love working with earthy materials as they have a natural ability to add warmth and ground your space through their raw textures. Wood, rattan and jute are all excellent options for natural materials and will also create a connection to the outdoors. Plants are another perfect example of bringing a touch of nature indoors whilst adding visual interest and breathing life into your space.

We hope today's bLOG post will help guide you in creating a minimalist living room design that speaks to you! With carefully chosen pieces, a neutral palette, natural touches, and a quality-over-quantity approach, you'll be able to achieve a clean, clutter-free and minimalist look, as well as a space that you can relax and rejuvenate in after a long day!
